I finally decided to post what I wrote that Mrs. Donna read for me at his funeral. So here it is...
My Bus Driver
Alzheimer’s disease. As defined in the dictionary, a progressive neurological disease of the brain that leads to the irreversible loss of neurons and dementia. As defined in my dictionary, a completely rude thief. It took my “bus driver” away. For those of you who don’t know my name is Emily and Pj, that’s what I loved to call him, was indeed the very best “bus driver” in the whole entire world. No, he didn’t drive a bright yellow bus, instead he drove a little ole blue Chevrolet truck. As a little kid I would love to spend the night with Nanna and Pj. I would spend most of the time I was there cleaning, sweeping, and dusting. Everyday granny would give me about two dollars, and fourteen cents for tax, and me and Pj would head to the Dollar Tree (also known as my magical kingdom). As a eight year old with two dollars in a place where everything was only a dollar. That meant I could pick out two things, anything I wanted, and get it. We would always hop out of the truck and Pj would say “Now don’t take too long granny is always waiting for us so we can eat a good ole lunch. Of course I would always say “Okay I won’t”, but if you were to ask him I think he would say that was never true. Granddaddy would always stand at the very front of the store and watch me. I would pick up one thing and put it in my basket, and then walk around find something else, pick it up put it in my basket, walk back to where I got the last thing, put it back, and go look some more until I found something else I liked and I would get it and take the other thing I had put in my basket, and return it to where I got it from. I would do this until I was completely tired of walking around. Nothing can ever take that memory away from me especially not Alzhiemer’s, because I refuse to let it. There are so many things that Granny and Pj did for me, and I can’t begin to start naming them because if I did we would probably be sitting here until it was my funeral. You can go now Pj we will let you go. You have shown us how to live; therefore you have no need to worry. We may miss you. But we will be just fine, because you taught us how we should live our life. We love you. Always have and always will.
My Protector and My Guide
Beautiful blue eyes with serenity of the sea,
Reflection of the sky’s on a bright and sunny day,
My little hand in yours, my protector and my guide,
Don’t walk too fast granddad for I am by your side.
My eyes are your eyes and your heart is my heart,
We share so much likeness we were never apart,
You would tell me your stories of World War ll,
I felt all that pain as the enemies kept score.
Big strong shoulders not just to carry me but to carry the world too,
The strength inside of you for all you went through,
The peace you gave me knowing you would always love me,
And the kindness and happiness you gave me and I gave you.
No fear do you have or grudges do you hold, my big strong hero
So brave and so bold, a firm hand to hold me a firm word shows the way
Your little girl forever it’s the way it will always stay
The bond that we have I have never seen or felt before
My face would light up when you would walk through the door
You tuck me in bed then turn off the light but I wasn’t scared
Of the shadows in the night
For I knew it was you keeping watch over me no harm and no badness
Would you let me see, safe in your arms untouchable it seems
After God took you away it was all in my dreams
And all that is left is my memories of you
I know you are with me and in my heart I’m with you too
Beautiful blue eyes with serenity of the sea,
Reflection of the sky’s reflections of me,
My little hand in yours, my protector and my guide,
Don’t walk too fast granddad for I am by your side.
(The poem I didn't write I found it on a website written by "Anonymous", but I did change a few words to make it fit.)
